The First 1000 Days - Paper & Printing Press

Paper & Printing Press Design

Summary

  • Adding a few fundamental objects would help players to express themselves creatively and to build stronger communities within the game. One set of enabling objects could be "Paper and Printing Press".
  • Players will be able to permanently write readable text on paper. Papers could be traded to other players or placed in a lot.
  • Printing presses will enable players to produce numerous identical copies of a paper, with some restrictions.
  • Some possible uses for this combination of objects include: city and neighborhood newspapers, party invitations, clues for murder mysteries or player-created agreements.
The Design

Paper
  • Blank paper is purchased from the catalog.
  • Paper can be written on by any player.
  • Once the text is written it cannot be changed. Fortunately, paper is cheap.
  • Paper can be destroyed via an interaction. Once destroyed, it's gone forever.
  • Paper can be read via an interaction. Ideally, it can also be read from within a player's inventory.
  • Although the ownership of the paper may change (see below), the original author's name is always visible.
  • Reporters are people who have both creativity and logic over 8. If a reporter writes on a page, then an additional icon (a newspaper?) will be visible, in addition to the author's name.
  • Paper can be placed on a surface or on the floor. If possible, paper should be stackable.
  • Paper that is placed will not count towards the total object limit for the lot, but will count towards the total tile limit.
  • Possibly, paper may be able to be placed in a lot even when you are not a roommate of the lot.
  • When paper is placed in a lot, it has no owner. Any player in the lot may pick up the paper and move it into their inventory. Ideally, this would be an animated sequence, instead of the usual "object turns grey and disappears"
  • Paper should decay into garbage fairly quickly.
Printing Press
  • A printing press can be purchased from the catalog, and will be very expensive.
  • Using an interaction on a printing press, a player may select a paper from their inventory and create a number of copies of the original paper, including the name of the original author. Printing pages in this way will incur a tunable cost per page.
  • Printing presses will only be able to reproduce pages that were originally written by a reporter.
  • Printing presses will be breakable.
