Introduction

Ever since the Beta of The Sims Online, players have been asking for a way to move their Sim from one city to another. Only until recently has this become possible with the introduction of the Sim Move feature. Sim Move allows players to pack up their Sim and all their worldly possessions including objects, skills, skill locks and job ranks. Of course, Sim Move doesn’t come without a few caveats. This guide will attempt to explain the process of moving your Sim another city, and the restrictions that are placed upon the Sim Move process.

Initiating a Move

To initiate a Sim Move, you first select the "Sim Description" tab under the Sim you want to move on the Select-a-Sim screen. From there you will see a "Sim Move" button. Clicking this button will bring up the Move Sim dialogs that will guide you through the process of submitting a request to move.

Step 1: Click the Sim Move Button

A confirmation dialog will appear after clicking the Sim Move button. This dialog warns you that you will move out of the city you currently live in and become a resident in the destination city you choose. Certain things will move with your Sim, while others will not. Below is a chart showing exactly what will and will not move to the destination city with your Sim.

Your Sim name may be modified if it is taken in the destination city. See the restrictions section for more information. If you have roommates in the house you own, they will inherit the house.

Step 2: Confirm you want to move

After you confirm you want to move, you will be given a list of available cities to move to. You can pick any city which does not fall under one of the restrictions in place, the most important being you can not move to a city in which you already have a Sim in.

Step 3: Choose a new city to move to

After selecting a city to move to, you will be given a confirmation dialog stating your Sim will be moving from your current city to the city you have just selected. You can continue to play in your current city until the morning maintenance. During the morning maintenance, your Sim will be relocated to their new city. If you requested to move after 1:00am PDT, your Sim will not move until the following day's maintenance.

Step 4: Move request accepted

Upon arrival in your new city you will receive a message from Maxis to welcome you and to let you know that your old mail messages have been transfered over.

At this time, Maxis does not charge for moving Sims to other cities.

Cancelling a Move

If for some reason you have decided you no longer want to move to another city before the morning maintenance has occurred, you have the option to cancel the move.

Cancel Sim Move Button

Clicking the Cancel Move button will bring up a confirmation dialog asking if you are sure you want to cancel the move. If you click yes, the move will be cancelled, otherwise the move will continue as scheduled.

To cancel a move, select the "Sim Description" tab under the Sim you want to cancel a move for on the Select-a-Sim screen. You will notice the "Sim Move" button has changed to a "Cancel Move" button.

Sim Move Restrictions

There are a few restrictions in place for Sim Move to ensure the game and the economy of special cities remains stable:

You cannot move to a city where you already have an existing Sim
You cannot move to a city that is already the destination for one of your Sims (a pending move request)
You cannot move into our out of Autonomy cities (Betaville)
You cannot move out of Test Center, but you can move into it. This restriction is in place to maintain data integrity between the testing environment of Test Center and production cities.
You cannot move into Dragon's Cove, but you can move out of it. This restriction is in place to maintain the hardcore economy of Dragon's Cove.
If you are moving to a city where your Sim name is already in use, it will be changed so it becomes unique by adding a number sequence to the name. If your name is already in use, you can change it once you arrive in your destination city.

Avatar Name Change

If after arriving at your destination city you find that a random number sequence has been attached to your name, you will probably want to change it.

Click to Change Name

Changing your avatar (Sim) name is a very simple process, and can be done from the Select a Sim screen. Clicking on the name you wish to change will connect you to the city and bring up a box that allows you to enter a new name. When entering a new name, it must be unique and follow the same guidelines as when creating a new Sim.

Once you have entered your new name and click the check box, it will be sent to the server to test if it is unique. If not, you will be asked to enter another name. If it is, you will be taken back to the Select a Sim screen and your new name will appear over the Sim.

Name Already In Use

If you are worried about your friends finding you under your new name, there is no need to worry. All bookmarks and relationship web links will be updated to show your new name instantly. The only restriction placed upon the avatar name change program is that you can only change the name of your Sim once every 7 days.
