Especially popular during the colonial period, these heavy, rough, yet ornately carved pieces were the physical embodiment of the cultural and militaristic aspirations of the young empire. Carved out of the now extinct hardwood trees from the territories, many Tomayo tables were destroyed in Nationalist uprisings. Surviving examples are extremely rare. |
